Horsemanship Classes – Thanks to Princeville Ranch

Our new session of P.E. has started thanks to Princeville Ranch. They have donated horsemanship lessons to our 5th/6th grade class. What a great way to learn control over your own body in order to make things easier and more positive for yourself. Thanks so much to David and Karen! We appreciate your generosity. The class loved lesson one and can’t wait to get back in the saddle.

Fair Play for All Culmination: Salvation Army

The 5th and 6th grade, along with a few past students and their parents, decided to not just cook food for those in need of it at the Salvation Army, they took it a step further to purchasing it as well. So, we shopped, sliced, diced, boiled, washed pots, served food and ate with our new acquaintences. The class did an amazing job with this project. It was a unanimous decision to do this again before the year is over. In fact the class is trying to organize a monthly lunch preparation.

9/23/10: Department of Water: Make a Splash Day

Our 5th/6th grade class joined about 500 other of Kauai’s 5th graders at the part out front of the Department of Water. We learned about protecting our watersheds instead of fixing them when they get ruined, the water cycle components, how many demands there are on the resource and how it would be to carry our water if we didn’t receive it in pipes to our homes. It was a good day and here are some photos.

Scuba Certification Class: Phase 1-the studying……

Well, Seasport Divers in Koloa was willing (and brave enough) to sign up our 5th/6th graders for a Jr. Open Water Scuba Certification Class. It was a really tough start, tons of textbook reading and test taking. Here is what our people looked like when they were in ‘classroom lockdown’ at the dive shop. I commend all of the students for working so hard on this work. In the end this will be a huge payoff, we will go under the sea together! Awesome!

International Day of Peace 9.21.2010

The International Day of Peace is a world wide movement to acheive peace on the entire planet for one day. One day with no war anywhere. A day when humanitarian efforts can be executed and not interfered with by the machine of war. It is a nobel idea and our students took part by spreading peace in ways they know how around their neighborhood.

The 5th and 6th grade students did some physical movements that represented peace and peacefulness. Kumu Mauliola did a wonderful job of getting the students to explore and share their movements. The students also wrote individual reflections on what peace means to them.

“Peace is about not fighting. It’s when countries all over the world stop fighting with each other and get along. You can use peace at home by not destroying stuff and being calm and safe. You can be peaceful with your friends by sharing and helping. Peace is nice to other people. The world would be a better place if people were more peaceful with others.”

“Peace is a lot of things. It comes in many shapes and sizes. Love and compassion are all forms of peace. Love all no matter how they look and speak, it’s the stuff on the inside that counts. I think everyone has good and peace inside of them.”

“Peace is caring and sharing with people. Love and be thoughtful to each other. Be kind to everyone no matter who or what they look like or talk like, you just love them and be kind to them. Spread positive thoughts around the glove and mankind. No matter how people say peace in a different language, you will always know it means peace.”

“Peace is in everything. Peace is the essence of life. Love, life, happiness. Don’t live a lie, it doesn’t work. Cherish want you have not what you might get. Peace starts small then grows. Live through love.”

We started our preparation for our peace day parade by brainstorming with the Pre-K/K students. The students discussed what peace means to them, what peace looks like and this is what we came up with. A beautiful wordle. Thanks to all of the students who shared their feelings of peace with each other.
